The 2nde DNL Physics in English class visited the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), an internationally renowned center focused on photons (light particle) from both a theoretical perspective (quantum information) and a more practical approach (microscopy techniques, for example).
During the semester, the students explored the evolution of microscopy since its invention in the XVIIth century, learning about various techniques and tools, including optical microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, and fluorescence labelling. They also prepared a sample, which they later observed, at ICFO, using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
During the trip, they visited the different buildings of the institute, gaining insight into the research environment and the profession of a researcher. They were accompanied by Mr. CORDIER—who organized the visit and completed his PhD in molecular biophysics, developing microscopy techniques at ICFO—and Ms. PENDINO.
Here are some images taken with the microscope. Can you guess what the sample is made of? (Send your answers to guillaume.cordier@lfb.es)
